UPMC-Université Pierre et Marie Curie

UPMC.
The UPMC, the first French university, is a key player in genetics, genomics and proteomics research. The development of this type of transdisciplinary research is a source of considerable progress in our understanding of the living world and its methods of analysis. It helps to understand the continuum ranging from the knowledge of genomes (genomics) to their function (post-genomics), i.e. from the gene and its regulation to the protein and its function, in physiological and pathological contexts.

Recognizing the challenges created by genomics and post-genomics for the advancement of sciences and the society, UPMC supports research in fields ranging from the most basic science to well established clinical projects or projects concerning environmental changes affecting the biodiversity of our planet’s ecosystems. Its most recent project is the creation of a “Genomics of Microorganisms” unit, whose aim is to help understand the interactions between microorganisms, a vast field, yet barely explored by genetic and genomic approaches and that would unite in silico and naturalist dimensions.
On the strength of the different disciplines developed in its laboratories, UPMC connects the role-players, a key element for the success of genomics and proteomics research that requires multidisciplinary approaches covering chemistry, physics and mathematics for modelling aspects. The data from genomics and post-genomics require biostatistics and bioinformatics analysis. Several UPMC teams are experts in signal processing and quality control, management of large databases, statistical analysis and data modelling. The HCMD modelling project led by the ‘Analytical Genomics’ team at the UPMC is an exemplary illustration and could lead to the development of new treatments for neuromuscular diseases.

Finally, the UPMC has platform networks that are crucial to the success of this research. For example, the post-genomic platform (P3S) is a gold mine for the scientific community. Located at the Pitié Salpêtrière, such equipment at the cutting edge of technology allow to determine at high speed, expression profiles of genes and genotyping of genetic markers, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).
